Combating Corrosion for Good Water Management

Combating corrosion is an essential part of effective water management. Often the corrosion that occurs is caused by the growth of destructive micro-organisms, which can cause system blockages and damage to pipes. These micro-organisms can also affect the water quality and pose health risks such as Legionella. Another common type of corrosion, especially in water tanks, is rust, which occurs when iron and oxygen react in the presence of water.

Here’s our expert guide on combating corrosion in both water tanks and heating systems…

Combating corrosion in heating systems

Without proper treatment a heating system’s output can be seriously compromised. Central heating systems benefit hugely from a regular inhibitor solution, which can easily be added to the water circulating through the system. Not only will the solution combat corrosive micro-organisms and scaling, it will also help improve the efficiency of the heating system itself.

Combating corrosion in water tanks

Water storage tanks can also suffer extensive damage as a result of corrosion. Though many modern tanks and pipes are manufactured from rust resistant materials, this is not always the case when it comes to older systems. We recently helped to replace two old tanks at a St Winefirde's primary school which had begun to corrode as a result of internal rust. The tanks were drained, dismantled and removed from the site before new cleaned and chlorinated tanks and fittings were installed. Even newer tanks and systems require regular treatment to safeguard them against the threat of corrosion in the future. Regular remedial work, such as draining and cleaning pipes and tanks, can help to ensure a clean bill of health.

Repairing the damage to a badly corroded system is both time consuming and expensive. To find out more about how we can help you with combating corrosion and avoiding a big repair bill visit the services page on our site or get in touch with our friendly team of water treatment experts.
