James Mercer Group – Mechanical Building Engineering

Summary & challenges

The job completed by BrodexTrident Ltd took place at the Ashworth High-Security Hospital, Maghull, Merseyside. The project, managed by the James Mercer Group, involved the carrying out of a refit of 7 seclusion rooms over a period of 4 months.

Part of the scheduled programme for each room refit was for water sampling to be carried out with UKAS accredited certification provided with disinfection of the domestic water pipework in accordance with BS8558. The boking of this was one of James Mercers’ main challenges.

As the company often needs to meet stringent project deadlines, this means that booking an exact date for water chlorination in advance is not possible, as the process is completed only after all the other work has been done. Therefore, working with a reliable supplier that can offer high level of flexibility was an issue.

Solution

Before chlorination, samples were taken of the water within the seclusion rooms and tested for general bacteria including ecoli and coliforms.

The disinfection procedure was then carried out by connecting a pulse metre injection rig to a drain point at the start of the pipework to be disinfected. The chlorine was pumped into the system and a level of 50ppm reached. Once that level was detected the system was left isolated for a period of 1 hour (known as the kill time). Through the 1 hour kill time, the strength of the chlorine was tested again to ensure that the system had maintained a sufficient dose of chlorine throughout the hour to enable the disinfection.

Following the chlorination process, samples were taken from outlets within the seclusion room and then again after 48 hours (from chlorination) and the same tests as previous were carried out.

Upon completion of the sampling and chlorination, the supporting documents were sent electronically to the James Mercer Group for handover of each seclusion room.

As a result of BrodexTrident’s expertise, experience and extreme flexibility of service, the project was completed in a timely and efficient manner and the client received their disinfection certificates and sample results quickly with no need for any revisit.

Results

The James Mercer Group is one of BrodexTrident’s continuously returning customers, that have trusted them with being their preferred local supplier. The reason for this is because of BrodexTrident’s abilitiy to deliver fast turn-around and meet urgent demands on short notice.
