Microbiological Water Sampling

Microbiological samples can be analysed for a range of parameters depending on the water system and reason for testing. This may include TACC/TVC, E. coli, coliform bacteria, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and other relevant microbiological indicators. 

Some sites may only require one-off sampling, while others may need routine testing as part of an ongoing water hygiene monitoring programme.

The sampling frequency depends on the water system, site risk, previous results, water usage and any specific regulatory, healthcare, client or insurer requirements. Some sites may only require one-off investigation sampling, while others may need routine microbiological monitoring. 

TACC and TVC are both used to describe general bacterial counts in water. They do not usually identify one specific organism, but they can provide an indication of overall microbiological water quality and whether there may be changes in system hygiene, stagnation or bacterial activity. 

E. coli and coliform bacteria are indicator organisms used to assess water quality. Their presence may suggest contamination, ingress, inadequate treatment or poor system hygiene, depending on the water system and sampling location.

If results indicate a concern, further investigation may be required to understand the likely cause. Depending on the findings, this may involve flushing, cleaning and disinfection, remedial works, review of control measures or re-sampling.
